A monkey-like figure with two long feathers, a tail and ornate clothes crouches on a vertical staff. The Pin presents it as the Monkey King. The British Museum connects Sun Wukong to the Chinese novel Journey to the West, in which he accompanies Xuanzang to India. This is the literary connection to China; the individual design’s artist, date and provenance remain unverified.

Fabric and fit

100% combed ring-spun cotton; 142 g/m². Pre-shrunk unisex T-shirt, side-seamed, with shoulder-to-shoulder taping. White, with direct-to-garment printing on the front. The blank garment comes from Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras or the United States. Made to order. Images are mockups of the printed garment; appearance may vary slightly with fabric and screen. The lightweight fabric may appear see-through, especially in lighter colours or certain lighting conditions.
